Verdict

The G2 is a true masterpiece: though it caters to the no-expense-spared audience, it will entice many to upgrade from the C2 despite its high cost

Pros

  • + LG's brightest OLED display
  • + Deep blacks, rich colors
  • + Enhanced gallery design

Cons

  • - Higher price than C2
  • - Dimmer than premium LCD TVs
  • - Stand not included

In 2021, LG made a bold move with its premium G-series OLED TVs. Instead of just focusing on a sleek design, they aimed to offer a genuine upgrade from their popular C series.

The 2021 G1 model was equipped with a new, higher brightness ‘Evo’ panel that the C1 lacked, making its higher price more justifiable.

For 2022, LG is keeping up this strategy: while the new C2 now also includes an Evo panel, the G2 takes it a step further with a new heat sink component. This allows the TV to run even brighter than before, setting it apart from its predecessor.

If you're looking for the best 4K OLED TV from LG in 2022, the G2 is the top choice.

The 65-inch G2 (OLED65G2) is priced at launch at £3300 / $3200 (around AU$5750). This makes it £300 / $200 (around AU$450) more expensive than the 2021 G1 model was at launch.

Interestingly, while the C2 has also seen a price increase (currently £2700 / $2500 / around AU$4700), the gap between its price and that of the G2 remains significant. You'll now need to shell out an additional £600 / $700 (around AU$1050) to upgrade to the G2’s enhanced brightness and ‘Gallery’ design. Plus, if you’re not wall-mounting, factor in extra costs for a stand.

How does this compare to other premium 2022 TVs? While Sony, Panasonic, and Philips have yet to announce their pricing, Samsung’s new S95B QD-OLED TV is priced at $3000 for the 65-inch version. This notably undercuts the G2, making future comparisons between these models highly anticipated once the S95B becomes available for review.

The LG OLED65G2 TV, described by LG as sporting a ‘Gallery’ design optimized for wall mounting, reveals a fresh new look. Diverging from the previous G series generations, the slim, chamfered dark sides have been replaced by a more monolithic two-tier design, featuring a high-quality metal ‘wrap’ around the front tier's sides. This not only enhances its premium feel but also maintains a sleek, ultra-thin profile, perfect for a flush wall mount.

For those who prefer placing their OLED65G2 on furniture, a stand is available for purchase. This year, the stand mirrors the high quality of the one provided with the C2 OLEDs, moving away from the previous model's spindly, wide-set legs. However, the official stand may come with a higher price tag (pricing yet to be confirmed). To save costs, shoppers might consider third-party alternatives that fit the G2’s standard VESA points.

Setting up the OLED65G2 on its optional stand revealed its significantly lighter build compared to previous models. This reduction in weight also makes wall mounting a less intimidating task.

The OLED65G2 is controlled via one of LG’s classic magic remotes, allowing users to select onscreen options by simply pointing the remote at the desired area on the screen.

The standout feature of the OLED65G2 is its newly added heat sink layer to LG’s high-brightness Evo OLED panels. This innovation allows the TV to run up to 15% brighter than last year’s G1 (and this year’s C2, which lacks the heat sink) without increasing the risk of screen burn.

Such a brightness increase brings the OLED65G2 closer to the 1000 nits mark, often considered crucial for delivering high dynamic range (HDR) with full impact.

For 2022, LG has introduced another round of enhancements to its processing system. The Alpha 9 Generation 5 processor promises superior upscaling of HD and SD content to 4K, thanks to advancements in AI-based image analysis and a streamlined upscaling flow that reduces processing steps for cleaner results.

The Dynamic Tone Mapping system, which adjusts HDR content to the screen’s capabilities, has also been improved. It now identifies both the genre of content and whether scenes are set in day or night, enabling more precise HDR optimization in real-time.

An impressive upgrade is the system’s ability to analyze the picture by dividing it into over 5000 blocks, compared to less than 600 in 2021. This advancement allows for more localized image adjustments, potentially resulting in more refined visuals.

Complementing this detailed image control is enhanced AI Object/Background recognition, which discerns background elements and the hierarchy of objects within an image. This recognition improves image emphasis, making visuals more lifelike and aligned with natural human perception.

Notably, the step-down C2 model also incorporates the Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor found in the OLED65G2, with the primary difference being the G2’s heat sink. However, the Alpha 9 engine is designed to optimize images for the specific screen it’s paired with, so the processor in the OLED65G2 will maximize the panel’s increased brightness potential.

Beyond picture quality, the Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor enhances audio capabilities, allowing the TV to upmix limited-channel sources to 7.1.2 channels, an upgrade from the 5.1.2 channels supported by 2021’s top-end models.

This new upmixing feature is also available on the new C2 OLEDs, but the OLED65G2 enhances it with a 60W, 4.2-channel speaker setup, compared to the C2’s 40W, 2.2 configuration.

LG OLEDs have been gamer favorites since the groundbreaking 9 series in 2019. The OLED65G2 continues this trend with increased data rates on its four HDMI 2.1 ports from 40Gbps to 48Gbps. While this isn’t a practical change in most scenarios, features like 4K/120Hz and VRR (including AMD Freesync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync) are still supported. Additionally, the Game Optimiser menu has been updated for easier access to key gaming features.

Input lag in the set’s Game mode is just 9.4ms with 1080p/60Hz feeds, minimizing any blame on the TV for poor gaming performance.

Xbox Series X enthusiasts will appreciate the OLED65G2’s continued support for Dolby Vision HDR at 4K/120Hz, a feature few other TVs can manage.

On the topic of Dolby Vision, the OLED65G2 is the first TV to support Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail, enhancing Dolby Vision IQ’s ability to adjust HDR presentation automatically based on ambient room conditions.

The TV also supports standard HDR10 and HLG HDR formats, but notably lacks support for HDR10+. While it’s disappointing, as other brands like Philips and Panasonic support both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, there is still more content available in Dolby Vision.

The OLED65G2 debuts the latest LG’s webOS 22 smart interface, featuring several new functionalities.

Firstly, it supports multiple profiles, allowing different household members to have custom home screens and user profiles.

A new Multi View feature lets you watch different sources on the screen simultaneously, with impressive flexibility and viewing options.

The latest webOS system also introduces Family Settings to promote healthier viewing habits, including a Usage Limiter, Screen Time monitor, Eye Care, and Volume Limiter options.

Lastly, the Always Ready feature offers more control over what the TV displays when not in active use. Options include showing the time and weather, playing digital art, or streaming music like a smart speaker.

We’ve now had the chance to see an OLED65G2 running against one of LG’s C2 models on two separate occasions – once in an LG demonstration using presumably pre-production screens, and once in the comfort of our own test rooms with final production line samples. Our full C2 review is on the way but, suffice to say, the G2 is the better performer.

First, the OLED65G2’s additional heat sink really does lead to a noticeable and welcome brightness boost over the C2 – despite the C2’s pictures themselves delivering a palpable brightness enhancement over the pictures of 2021’s C1. Second, unlike the early demo units, the finished OLED65G2 delivers its brightness enhancements without washing out the colours.

Going back to the brightness lift, we’re very happy to see that you can appreciate its benefits in both of the ways we’d hoped you would. So on the one hand, the very brightest ‘peaks’ of an HDR image have more purity, brightness and ‘gleam’ than they do on the C2. We’re talking here about such things as sun reflecting off metal; shots of the moon or street lights against a black sky; stars, raindrops and so on. Also, though, the overall brightness of light, full-screen HDR content is increased over the C2, making such pictures look more realistic and ‘HDR’.

Both of these brightness advantages make images look richer and more expressive, which in turn enhances their sense of depth/three-dimensional space. The benefits of the extra brightness aren’t just visible from time to time, either; you can feel them in almost every frame of an HDR source, be it a naturalistically shot daylight interior or a dramatically lit neon-drenched night-time exterior.

What’s more, since the extra brightness is delivered on the factory sample without fading colours, there’s actually also a boost to colour volume and vibrancy over the C2 and last year’s G1. To be clear, this applies across all of the OLED65G2’s picture presets, including the Cinema, Cinema Home and Filmmaker Mode options, and makes pictures look more authentic and realistic. In other words, there’s nothing forced about any of the OLED65G2’s brightness and colour enhancements.

It’s a relief, too, to find that the OLED65G2’s brightness boost doesn’t mess with the legendarily deep black tones LG OLED TVs have long been known for. They’re every bit as inky as they’ve ever been. What’s more, there seems to be slightly less noise in dark areas than we’ve previously seen with LG OLEDs, pointing to improvements in the handling of near-black picture details. This makes it easier, too, to appreciate the TV’s immaculate reproduction of shadow detail in dark picture areas.

As if all this wasn’t great news enough, LG also appears to have improved both its motion performance and upscaling of sub-4K sources for 2022. When it comes to motion, the default Natural setting generates substantially fewer unwanted side effects than it did last year. So much so that while motion processing will always be anathema to some movie enthusiasts, we can actually see many ‘regular punters’ choosing to leave it on. The less heavy-duty Cinematic Movement option, meanwhile, also seems to deliver more consistent and less choppy results if you’re after a setting that just takes the edge off judder.

All of these many strengths and improvements don’t just make the OLED65G2 a fantastic performer with TV shows and movies. They also make it next-gen brilliant with the latest gaming graphics, getting even more impact, dynamism and clarity out of the 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR splendour now available from PC graphics cards, the Xbox Series X and (VRR-aside) PS5. Gaming on the OLED65G2 is so much fun, in fact, that it’s hard to believe it’s legal.

Great news keeps rolling in! The OLED65G2's upscaling improvements are stellar. Upscaled images now look sharper, denser, and packed with detail, free of the usual jagged edges on curves and diagonals. Picture noise is virtually eliminated, even with the Standard preset's crisp settings.

While the noise reduction can sometimes smooth out a bit of grain from grainy sources, the resulting image still holds a 4K-like quality without noticeable lag or blur. We much prefer this slight trade-off to avoid excessive grain, double edging, or a gauzy picture effect often caused by other upscaling methods.

OLED's inherent advantage with viewing angles continues to shine, making it difficult to find any drawbacks in the OLED65G2's visual output.

It's worth noting that high-end LCD TVs can achieve significantly more brightness for full-screen images and peak HDR highlights compared to the OLED65G2. Nevertheless, the OLED65G2 compensates with its intense contrast from pixel-specific lighting, standing out brighter than most OLED TVs.

Dolby Vision settings might appear slightly dark, occasionally causing some shadow detail to be lost and minor black level fluctuations.

Although the OLED65G2 usually handles its brightness enhancements well, extremely bright colors can sometimes flare out slightly. Thankfully, these instances are rare and usually unnoticed unless specifically sought out.

Lastly, while the OLED65G2's brightness boosts are consistently impressive, they might not be dramatically extreme. Highlights and full-screen bright images look a bit punchier and more expressive compared to the C2, especially when compared to last year's C1. We'll delve deeper into this in our concluding thoughts.

LG’s OLED65G2 TV brings a refreshing improvement in sound quality, making significant strides forward for their OLED TV audio. Particularly noteworthy is the enhanced dynamic range when switched to Dolby Atmos mode. Previously, LG’s TVs had a tendency to sound restrained with Dolby Atmos mixes, but the OLED65G2 changes that. It feels as if a tap of extra power has been turned on compared to last year’s G1 model, delivering a broader soundstage with clearer, accurately placed effects, and richer mid-range and bass.

The OLED65G2 might not have sufficient power to handle the climax of a full-throttle action movie, but it does manage to avoid sounding overwhelmed during intense moments.

The TV’s new 7.1.2 upmixing feature is also noteworthy. Although it may seem ambitious to claim support for so many channels with a 4.2 speaker setup, it still offers a more detailed and "steered" soundstage without any misplacement of audio. As suggested by the ‘.2’ in the 7.1.2 spec, there's even a hint of height in the remixing done by the Alpha 9 Gen 5 chip, which is impressive for a TV rather than a soundbar.

While the AI Sound system still outperforms Dolby Atmos mode in terms of sheer power and impact, Dolby Atmos now offers its own benefits with more precise audio steering and a slightly more natural soundstage.

For those debating between the OLED65G2 and OLED65C2, it’s worth highlighting that the G2 packs 60W of audio power across its 4.2 channels, compared to 40W across 2.2 channels on the C2. After testing both models side by side, the OLED65G2 undoubtedly delivers a louder and more impactful audio experience, with its speakers handling this extra power without faltering under pressure.

The OLED65G2 is hands down LG’s finest OLED TV to date. With significant sound improvements over the 2021 models, it elevates its audio game, while its new heat sink and processor combo up the brightness, delivering a stunning performance. From vibrant HD SDR to breathtaking 4K HDR and the top-notch visuals of the latest gaming consoles, this TV offers it all, without any overblown brightness.

Although the enhancements over the new C2 panel are subtle rather than extraordinary, it does beg the question of whether the OLED65G2 justifies the extra £600 / $700 (approximately AU$1050) compared to the OLED65C2. This cost factor becomes even more significant if you’re considering splurging on the OLED65G2’s optional stand.

The OLED65G2’s advantages, while not overwhelming, are undeniably noticeable and elevate almost every frame to a superior level. For the home cinema enthusiast who settles for nothing less than the best, the OLED65G2 is a highly tempting proposition.
