The Philips 48OLED807 is currently priced at £1249, which is around $1420 / AU$2125. Note that Philips OLED TVs aren’t currently sold in the US or Australia.

Its key rivals include the impressive Sony XR-48A90K (£1499 / $1398 / AU$2995), the Panasonic TX-48LZ1500 (£1599), and the LG OLED48C2 (£1099 / $1300 / AU$2376). Although prices fluctuate, we anticipate the Philips OLED807 to maintain a similar price to the LG C2, while the Sony A90K and Panasonic LZ1500 are likely to remain more expensive.

If you're looking for a bigger TV, the OLED807 comes in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch sizes. For a smaller 42-inch OLED, you'll need to consider options from LG or Sony.

Design

The design seamlessly blends aesthetics with functionality, making it a perfect fit for modern interiors. Its sleek lines and minimalist approach ensure it doesn't just perform well, but also complements any room's decor. Distinguished by its precision and craftsmanship, this piece will undoubtedly catch the eye of anyone who appreciates thoughtful design. Whether you're looking to enhance your living space or add a touch of elegance to your office, this design stands out as an excellent choice.

We were rather fond of the minimalist, very low-profile feet of the OLED806 (and the OLED805 before it), so the switch to a new pedestal stand isn’t entirely welcome. However, this pedestal is fairly elegant and assembles easily. Additionally, it allows the TV to swivel, a rare and appreciated feature these days. Unfortunately, the stand’s glossy finish can reflect light from the screen, which might be distracting when watching a movie in a dark room.

Without the stand, the OLED807's design closely resembles that of the OLED806. The screen is enveloped by a flush black bezel (slightly slimmer than before) framed by a super-thin dark grey metal edge. While the set is thicker than most OLEDs, measuring 6.8cm at its thickest point towards the bottom of the chassis, the top portion features a 4mm-thick panel.

Philips OLED TVs are known for being a bit thicker than others, mostly due to their unique Ambilight feature. Ambilight uses LEDs around the TV's rear to project colorful light onto the surrounding walls, enhancing the viewing experience. Last year's OLED806 had Ambilight on three sides, while this year's model introduces Next Generation Ambilight—each LED is now individually controlled for better precision. Though the difference isn't huge, it makes this cool feature even better. If you prefer not to use the dynamic light show of 'Follow Video', you can turn it off or set it to bias lighting to reduce eye strain.

The rear of the TV also houses its connections, including four HDMIs, three USBs, an optical output, and a traditional 3.5mm headphone socket. Among the four HDMI ports, two support 48Gbps 2.1 with 4K/120Hz capabilities. All HDMIs offer VRR (variable refresh rate) and ALLM (auto-low latency mode). The TV also supports Dolby Vision gaming up to 60Hz and includes HGiG for accurate HDR in games.

Most TVs with only two HDMI 2.1 ports use one for eARC, limiting other HDMI 2.1 devices. However, Philips has built ARC support into the other three HDMI ports. This lets you free up HDMI 2.1 ports for devices like your Xbox Series X, PS5, and gaming PC. Although ARC handles only the lossy version of Dolby Atmos, most streaming services only use this version, making Philips' solution quite practical. We hope more brands will adopt this approach.

If you don't connect external sources, Philips' Android TV 11 system offers plenty of content. Nearly every streaming service you could need is supported, including those with HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. With an aerial connection, Freeview Play handles TV channels and catch-up content, supplemented by individual apps for all UK terrestrial channels.

This version of Android TV is snappier than last year's. However, its recommendations are limited to five apps, only three of which (Prime Video, Apple TV, and Disney+) are widely used.

The OLED807 boasts an upgraded 6th Gen P5 processor featuring what Philips calls “Ambient Intelligence.” This smartly adjusts brightness, color, and contrast based on ambient lighting, much like Dolby Vision IQ. This is especially beneficial for maintaining shadow detail in well-lit rooms. Ambient Intelligence works with all signal types, unlike Dolby Vision IQ, which is limited to Dolby sources.

Although the Dark Detail Optimization and Eye Care features are worth trying, we're less convinced by the Color Temperature Optimization, which makes footage appear too blue under room lighting.

Picture

When it comes to delivering stunning visuals, our latest TV model surpasses expectations. Its vivid color reproduction and flawless clarity keep you immersed in every scene, ensuring a cinematic experience right in your living room.

Thanks to advanced imaging technology, every frame is enhanced for optimal viewing. Whether you're watching a high-action blockbuster or a serene nature documentary, the picture quality remains consistently top-notch.

Our TV adapts to various lighting conditions, providing a perfect display regardless of ambient light. From deep blacks to bright whites, the contrast is meticulously balanced, giving you a realistic and captivating visual journey.

Additionally, the wide viewing angles ensure that everyone in the room gets the best seat, with no color distortion from any angle. Experience a whole new level of entertainment with our state-of-the-art TV, designed for pure visual enjoyment.

The Philips OLED807, much like last year's models, requires some fine-tuning to deliver its optimal picture quality. Most default picture modes appear overly exaggerated, especially in terms of sharpness, while more authentic presets may seem slightly soft and flat.

For Dolby Vision content, the Dolby Vision Dark setting might come off as too dull. Switching to Dolby Vision Bright introduces significant processing that can make scenes look forced. We recommend using Dolby Vision Bright but with Ultra Resolution turned off and the Sharpness setting reduced by a few points. Motion processing tweaks are also advised, which we'll discuss shortly.

With these adjustments, the Philips OLED807's picture performance is remarkable. Watching Top Gun: Maverick, the image is exceptionally vivid, surpassing even the impressive Sony A90K. The picture boasts a sharpness that adds solidity and three-dimensionality, with bright highlights and colors that dazzle splendidly. Blacks are incredibly deep, yet the shadow details are more pronounced than those of its top competitors. This thrilling contrast and subtle detail make the Philips OLED807 a standout performer.

With Thor: Love And Thunder in Dolby Vision, concerns about losing detail in the brightest parts of the picture are quickly dispelled. The moon above Asgard during the nighttime attack is brilliantly bright yet detailed in its shading. The town's lights punch through the darkness with more intensity, and Thor's armor appears richer in gold, reflecting magnificently and with sharp definition.

For an HDR10 version of No Time To Die, we prefer starting with Filmmaker Mode, adding a touch of Sharpness, and setting HDR Perfect to Medium. The Philips OLED807 remains crisp and bright, handling colors beautifully. Skin tones appear vibrant and lifelike without exaggeration, maintaining a natural warmth. Bond's tan suit stays true to color, and the sky above Matera remains a stunning blue.

Color balancing is trickier in SDR, requiring effort to avoid overly dull or vibrant tones. With adjustments (like adding sharpness and vibrancy to Filmmaker Mode or refining the Home Cinema preset), the OLED807 can deliver a satisfyingly subtle image. Standard-definition signals are also well-handled as long as you steer clear of aggressively processed presets.

Regarding motion processing, the Philips OLED807 generally excels but lacks a 'Goldilocks' setting. The Movie mode delivers smooth, sharp panning shots, such as Matera's cemetery in No Time To Die, skilfully avoiding the soap opera effect. However, occasional over-sharpened or shimmery movements might prompt some users to switch to the Pure Cinema setting, which introduces minor blur and judder. Though both settings are commendable, the Sony A90K offers a more balanced approach.

Sound

Experience the vibrant, rich audio quality that transforms every note into an immersive soundscape. Our cutting-edge technology ensures that every beat is clear, and every melody resonates beautifully. Whether you're streaming your favorite playlist or watching the latest blockbuster, our system delivers an exceptional audio experience.

The OLED807 stands out with its enhanced audio capabilities, boasting a 4.1 system with two additional drivers compared to its predecessor, the OLED806. This upgrade culminates in an impressive 70W total output, offering a remarkable listening experience. To truly appreciate its sound quality, avoid the default Entertainment setting, which introduces an artificial edge and exaggerates bass, making voices sound unnatural.

Switch to the Original setting for a cleaner, more authentic audio experience, with ample bass that surpasses typical TV performance. Although it may not project sound into the room as effectively as the Sony A90K with its vibrating panel, the Philips excels in other areas, delivering tighter and more controlled audio, especially in the lower frequencies.

The audio may not fill the room extensively, but it provides a good sense of width and height, creating an immersive atmosphere. This enhances scenes like the stormy street outside Bill and Georgie's house in It, and Pennywise's eerie appearance in the storm drain.

The garage scene in the movie, known for testing audio dynamics, showcases the Philips' ability to keep pace with the escalating soundtrack, only falling slightly short before the crescendo. The OLED807 delivers a substantial amount of bass, outperforming most competitors with its natural and controlled audio.

While a soundbar, such as the Sonos Beam Gen 2, would undeniably enhance the OLED807's audio, those relying on the TV's built-in speakers will find it superior to many alternatives.

Verdict

After exploring the key features and user experiences, it's evident that this product stands out in its category. Its unrivaled performance and intuitive design ensure that it will be a favorite among users. Whether you're a new user or a seasoned enthusiast, this product delivers on its promises and goes above and beyond expectations. With its sleek appearance and impressive capabilities, it truly sets a benchmark in the industry. Highly recommended for anyone looking for exceptional quality and reliability!

Although getting the OLED807 to deliver its best performance requires some effort, it's effort that's truly worthwhile. In terms of performance, it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the top models in its class, excelling in areas like vibrancy, clarity, and shadow detail. Despite this, it tends to be more affordable and is likely to remain so throughout its lifespan.

For those seeking advanced gaming specs and a more seamless user experience, the LG C2 may be a better choice. However, if you're willing to put in a bit of work, the OLED807 will reward you with exceptional quality.
