Right out of the box, the picture presets give us some of the least natural and most processed images we've encountered. The black levels, although darker than expected at this price point, end up swallowing subtle details, making dark scenes appear hollow and overly intense. Even using the Dolby Vision Bright preset doesn't resolve this, and the Dolby Vision Dark mode, preferred for its accuracy, only exaggerates the issue.

Philips’ technique to enhance black levels on the 65PUS8807 can sometimes be intrusive, causing the baseline black levels to fluctuate noticeably within scenes as bright objects come into and out of view.

The color reproduction is another point of contention. During dark scenes, shading appears coarse, skin tones look unnatural, and there is more color noise than usual. Certain colors, like the trees in the opening scene of It, appear inaccurately—brown instead of muted green. Moreover, the colors during this sequence seem inconsistent.

Switching between different presets like Natural or Vivid makes some tones, especially greens, appear exaggerated, while the gentler Movie mode makes the image look washed out and yellowish. Although a Filmmaker Mode might have offered a solution, it’s absent from this budget-friendly set.

However, there are ways to mitigate these issues. Tweaking the HDR Premium mode to Medium brings out more skin tone detail, and adjusting the Black Level setting helps restore some shadow detail and reduce color coarseness. These adjustments do come with trade-offs, like less inky black levels and some backlight clouding, but they are less problematic than the default settings.

On a brighter note, the screen achieves impressive brightness for its price, making bright scenes much less affected by the color and detail loss issues seen in dark scenes. The disparity in quality between bright and dark footage is quite stark.

The 65PUS8807 also excels in sharpness and detail, especially with native 4K images, and it upscales HD content aggressively. Despite tweaking, the images never quite achieve the natural, balanced look typical of Philips TVs, categorizing the 65PUS8807 as merely average in picture quality.
