Samsung might not have been the pioneer of Mini LED technology, as TCL had already introduced it a year earlier. However, Samsung made significant strides in making Mini LED technology mainstream, especially in Europe, and showcased its full potential.
Fast forward to today, and Samsung's second generation of Mini LED TVs, epitomized by the QE65QN95B (QA65QN95B in Australia), is here under the weight of high expectations. Can it exceed the lofty benchmarks set last year? And how will it fare against the growing competition from premium OLED-based models?
Price
The QE65QN95B is Samsung’s flagship 65-inch 4K LCD TV for 2022 and initially carried a hefty £3399 / AU$3999 price tag. However, you can now grab this top-tier TV at a much more attractive £2699 / AU$3500.
Pricing comparisons with other premium models will vary based on your location. For instance, LG's stellar G2 model is currently available for £2899 / AU$5300 in the 65-inch size, while the highly acclaimed Sony A95K QD-OLED is priced at £3299 / AU$5995. Interestingly, Samsung’s own QD-OLED TV, the S95B, comes at a lower cost compared to this QN95B Neo QLED, available for £2499 (around AU$3730).
Design
When it comes to design, our latest product embodies elegance and functionality. Its sleek profile not only enhances its visual appeal but also contributes to its easy handling and user-friendliness. Crafted with precision, the product seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with practical design elements, making it a perfect addition to any environment.
The attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the smooth finish to the intuitive button placement. It's designed to perform and to impress, fitting effortlessly into your daily routine. Experience the perfect fusion of style and substance with our new design.
The QE65QN95B continues Samsung's tradition of making a bold statement with its premium QLED TVs. The screen is encased in an ultra-thin frame that's almost invisible when viewed head-on. The rear panel is as uniformly flat as the screen, and for 2022, Samsung has made it even sleeker by trimming a few more millimeters off the depth, enhancing its already stunning ‘Infinity’ design.
As a result of this reduction in depth, the sides of the TV have become slimmer, yet they maintain a touch of glamor with their silvery metallic finish.
For those who dislike staring at a blank 65-inch black screen when the TV is off, Samsung's got you covered. The Ambient Mode lets you display a ‘screensaver’—either one of your own photos or a selection from a vast range of digital artworks and short video screensavers available on Samsung's servers—instead of the usual black screen.
The 65QN95B’s flat rear panel features eight robust mid-range drivers along its bottom edge, with additional smaller speakers discreetly hidden behind grilles around the rear edges. This unique speaker configuration provides an advanced version of Samsung’s Object Tracking Sound (OTS) system, which precisely places sound effects to match the on-screen action.
To maintain its pristine appearance, Samsung has moved all the QE65QN95B’s connections to an external box called the ‘One Connect’. This box attaches to the screen via a single light-colored cable that transmits power, picture, and sound. Notably, the One Connect can be slotted onto the back of the TV’s centrally mounted stand, resulting in an almost cable-free look.
This external connection box and single-cable setup are particularly advantageous for those planning to wall-mount their TV, complementing the QN95B’s ultra-slim body.
The One Connect box includes four HDMI 2.1 sockets, all ready for cutting-edge gaming features like 4K 120Hz, VRR, and ALLM. There are also three USB ports for connecting hard drives for digital tuner recording or playing multimedia from USB storage.
However, note that there's no physical headphone port. Only Bluetooth headphone support is available unless you use an adapter.

The QE65QN95B’s standout feature is its use of mini LEDs, which are just one fortieth the size of those in regular LED TVs. This allows more LEDs to fit into the screen area, leading to brighter and more precisely lit pictures. The QN95B pairs these LEDs with a powerful local dimming system, offering 720 independently controlled dimming zones for exceptional light control.
Even though 720 dimming zones fall short of the pixel-level control provided by OLED technology, the QE65QN95B compensates with its impressive HDR-friendly brightness. The highest Dynamic preset reaches nearly 3000 nits, while the accurate Filmmaker Mode hits 2000 nits. In contrast, OLEDs typically peak between 700 and 900 nits.
The only downside is that the QE65QN95B’s Mini LED and local dimming setup is similar to its predecessor. So, where are the improvements?
The biggest enhancement is the new Shape Adaptive Light Control. This feature allows each lighting zone to finely adjust light intensity across its area. This capability adds more punch to bright highlights while minimizing unwanted backlight halos.
Samsung’s latest Neo QLED processor brings even more AI-driven enhancements than 2021’s QN95As, promising improvements in upscaling, color accuracy, near-black performance, and object recognition. The upgraded 14-bit picture processing system delivers better color and shadow detail than the previous 12-bit engine.
The new processor also enhances the OTS audio system, featuring a face recognition tool for more precise vocal positioning. Additionally, the QN95B is the first Samsung TV to include Dolby Atmos decoding, offering clearer and more immersive sound for Dolby Atmos-mixed content.
Samsung’s Tizen-based smart system includes virtually every streaming service imaginable, although Freeview Play is absent in the UK. While this omission means losing Freeview Play’s convenient browsing and organizational features, individual catch-up services are still available.
In 2022, Samsung revamped its smart interface to a full-screen design filled with ads and content recommendations, straying far from the previously compact, customizable interface. We hope Samsung will refine this system in future updates, as LG has done with its WebOS interface.
For gamers, the QN95B offers comprehensive connectivity, including support for AMD Freesync Premium Pro VRR, input lag as low as 10.4ms, three lag settings for different balances between lag and picture quality, and a Game Dashboard for quick access to gaming tools and source information.

Concerns that Samsung's second generation of Mini LED might struggle by not increasing the number of Mini LEDs or dimming zones are quickly disproven. The contrast sees a notable improvement, offering deeper blacks and intense bright highlights that make colors pop.
This enhanced contrast is achieved without the usual light leakage halos around bright objects, a common issue with locally dimmed LCD TVs. Even with enriched white objects on a near-black backdrop, there's less backlight clouding than on the QN95A, which already set high standards in contrast and backlight control.
The colors are more explosive and vibrant than on any previous Samsung QLED TV, delivering a huge color volume to showcase the full glory of today's wide color and high dynamic range content.
The new 14-bit processing engine adds subtlety to the vibrancy, producing smooth color blends without striping or blocking noise. Known for sharp 4K pictures, Samsung raises the bar with even more precise color reproduction on the QN95B.
Samsung's latest processing engine also strengthens its reputation for excellent upscaling. HD and even SD content is upscaled to the QN95B's 4K resolution impressively well, minimizing issues like exaggerated grain, color inaccuracies, double edges, and inconsistent line thickness.
Combining all the QN95B's strengths offers the most powerful and vivid demonstration of HDR's potential in the TV world to date.
The QN95B's stunning picture quality isn't limited to video sources. It's also an amazing gaming display, with its vivid colors, brightness, sharpness, and high contrast perfectly complementing the state-of-the-art graphics from the Xbox Series X, PS5, and the latest high-end PC graphics cards. The visual appeal is enhanced by nearly eliminating backlight haloing and offering an incredibly quick response time, especially with 120Hz sources, placing Samsung at the pinnacle of gaming performance.
A few minor picture issues are worth noting. The TV supports HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision, meaning HDR content mastered in Dolby Vision will play as HDR10 without the extra scene-by-scene data Dolby Vision provides.
Viewing from an angle introduces backlight blooming that's invisible when viewed head-on. Additionally, while shadow detail has improved from the QN95A, the Standard preset on the QN95B occasionally lacks shadow detail, an issue not found in the Movie and Filmmaker modes.
Motion settings can cause unwanted processing side effects if using the default Picture Clarity setting. It's advisable to turn off motion processing or set a Custom mode with low blur and judder reduction to avoid noticeable artefacts.
The Dynamic picture preset can push colors and bright areas too hard, making them look unnatural, easily fixed by using other presets. In scenes where a very bright small element appears against a dark background, the brightness may be dialed down to avoid backlight clouding, a less noticeable issue than with 2021's QN95A due to the QN95B's Shape Adaptive Light Control technology.
In summary, while the QE65QN95B has some avoidable and correctible minor picture niggles, its overall picture performance is outstanding, significantly improving on Samsung's 2021 Mini LED models.

The QN95B’s sound offers a mixed experience. While it may not match the exceptional quality of its visuals, it still holds up well compared to standard TV audio.
One of its standout features is the accuracy of the OTS system in positioning sound effects. For example, if two people are conversing from opposite sides of the screen, you’ll hear one voice on the left and the other on the right. Impressively, if they move around while talking, their voices track their movements.
This principle applies to any sound-producing object on the screen, and it even extends a bit beyond the screen's edges, giving you a slight sense of a larger world.
The TV delivers a decent amount of bass without distortion, and subtle audio details are clear and plentiful.
The main issue, however, is that the sound doesn’t project forward from the screen. Instead, it feels like the action is happening just behind the screen, resulting in less engagement compared to the visuals.
This slight detachment makes the sound seem somewhat confined and less dynamic.
